Reflective Socratic Seminar
Opening question(s):
Option 1 - Name one US imperialist action that you could argue was justified. Name one US imperialist action that you could argue was unjustifiably aggressive.
Option 2 - Share one word that you feel is synonymous with imperialism. A word may not repeat more than once.
Core questions:
1. What would the founders have to say about US imperialist actions in the 19th and 20th centuries?
2. Is imperialism inherently evil (or we could substitute the word "inhumane")?
3. Do you think that patriotism and imperialism are interconnected concepts?
Closing question:
1. If you had a time machine and could change one US action related to imperialism (domestically or globally) in history, what would it be and why?

Reflections
As you can see, American Imperialism was a concept with deep origins and affected many parts of the world. From continuing the concept of Manifest Destiny to expanding America's global presence, America's engagement with imperialist actions showed the nation's longing to become a global power similar to other Western nations like Britain. Some critics of current American foreign policy believe that this age of imperialism never truly ended, and that American actions around the world are fueled by an innate desire to control and expand.
